Description
The climb to Gerlach peak 2655m is the most famous and most sought-after climb in the High Tatras. It is an unforgettable adventure in one day from the foot of the mountain to its peak and back to the valley. The climb to Gerlach can be guided by several routes and difficulties. The most common way to climb Gerlach is via Velická próba to the summit and the descent is via Batizovská próba to the Batizovská valley. Options are Gipsyho ferata (Tatarkova ferata) or Martinovka route, but these routes require more experience and better fitness. If you are not sure, contact me and together we will choose the most suitable route for you.
Ascent to Gerlach:
- 7-8 hours depending on the route of ascent to Gerlach
- The ascent starts early in the morning in Tatranská Polianka with paid shuttle to Sliezsky dom. From Sliezsky dom we continue on foot along the trail to the start of the route. The ascent is guided according to the chosen ascent route. At the foot of Gerlach we tie on the rope, put on our helmets and start climbing according to the chosen variant. The ascent itself takes place in climbing terrain and all the time everyone in the team is tied to the rope. During the climb we usually have 2 breaks to refresh and have a small snack. At the summit, there is a longer break followed by a photo session at the summit cross and a well-deserved rest. The descent is first through the Batizovský couloir and later through the Batizovská próba into the Batizovská valley. In the valley we untie ourselves from the rope and continue on easy walking terrain to the marked trail near Batizovské pleso. From the lake we continue along the main trail to Sliezsky dom where after a short refreshment we will be driven back to Tatranská Polianka.

Difficulty of ascent to Gerlach:
- The ascent to Gerlach peak is not suitable for beginners
- Good fitness and climbing coordination required
- Difficulty of ascent is I-II UIAA (Velická and Batizovská próba)
- Tatarkova (Gipsy’s) ferata and Martinovka II-III UIAA (max. 2 persons)
- Technically challenging terrain with exposed spots and climbing
- The whole ascent is done with a rope
Recommended preparatory hikes:
Required equipment:
- high hiking boots (vibram sole)
- backpack
- waterproof clothing for the mountains
- gloves
- hat
- food and drink 1,5 l/person
- spare sweatshirt (polartec or merino)
- magnesium or lump salt against cramps
- list of compulsory equipment
Ascent to Gerlach price includes:
- guiding with a UIAGM mountain guide (the mountain guide has third party insurance and a valid UIAGM membership)
- photos from the tour (with mobile phone)
- rental of mountaineering equipment (helmet, seat or crampons and ice axe in winter)
